Kansas City, MO Holiday Trash Schedule

//

Admin

Kansas City, Missouri provides trash and recycling collection services to residents through the City’s Public Works Department. Trash collection schedules can be impacted by holidays and inclement weather. This article explains Kansas City’s holiday trash pickup schedule and provides tips for residents.

Holiday Schedule Overview

  • Trash collection is delayed by one day when a holiday falls during the week.
  • No trash collection on major holidays – collection resumes the following day.
  • “No tag” weeks allow extra trash bags without purchase of tags twice a year.
  • Inclement weather can also delay trash pickup.

Kansas City suspends trash collection on major holidays including:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day

For holidays falling during the week, collection is delayed by one day for the remainder of the week. For example, if the holiday is on Monday, Monday’s pickup shifts to Tuesday, Tuesday shifts to Wednesday, etc.

During holiday weeks, Friday collection occurs on Saturday. Residents should expect a one-day delay all week.

No Tag Weeks

Twice a year, Kansas City offers “no tag” weeks after major holidays. During no tag weeks, residents can set out up to 12 extra trash bags without purchasing additional tags. Bags must weigh under 40 pounds.

No tag weeks occur:

  • After Independence Day: July 5-10
  • After Christmas: December 26-30

No hazardous waste, bulky items, or yard waste will be collected during no tag weeks.

Inclement Weather Policy

Kansas City may suspend trash collection during major snow storms. This allows trash collection staff to assist with snow removal operations.

If collection is suspended due to weather, the holiday collection schedule goes into effect. For example, if Monday pickup is cancelled due to snow, Monday’s route will be collected on Tuesday.

Residents can check kcmo.gov/snow for trash collection updates during snow storms.

Setting Out Trash Properly

  • Place trash bags within 10 feet of the curb by 7AM on collection day. Do not place in alleys.
  • Use bags that weigh less than 40 pounds and are shorter than 4 feet.
  • Clearly label and wrap sharp objects like broken glass.
  • Double bag and tie animal/human waste.
  • Report missed collection by 5PM day-of through 311 online or by phone.

Holiday Tips

Around holidays, increase recycling and cut down on trash by reusing decorations, wrapping paper, and shipping boxes.

Reduce food waste by planning meals carefully and freezing leftovers. Compost vegetable scraps if possible.

Properly dispose of hazardous waste like batteries, CFL bulbs, electronics, paints, oils, and cleaners through the Household Hazardous Waste Program.

Real Christmas trees can be taken to leaf and brush drop-off sites January 6-13. Remove all decorations first.
