Memphis provides trash and recycling collection services to residents through the city’s Solid Waste Management division. This article explains Memphis’ trash and recycling schedules, services, and policies.

Trash and recycling services are provided by the Solid Waste Management division of the Memphis Public Works department. Policies, schedules, and other solid waste services are outlined on the Solid Waste Management page of the city’s website.
Trash Collection Schedule
- Weekly curbside collection for all households
- Collection occurs on the same day each week
- Find your collection day by entering your address on the Collection Schedule Lookup
- Trash must be inside carts, bags, or cans up to 50 pounds each
- Extra trash is collected bi-weekly (see Bulk Collection below)
Trash is collected weekly using green 95-gallon carts provided by the city. Carts must be placed within 2 feet of the curb by 7AM on collection day. Trash should not overflow or be placed on top of the cart. Bagged trash up to 50 pounds is allowed beside carts.
Recycling Collection Schedule

Recycling is collected weekly on the same day as trash using gray 96-gallon carts. Accepted recyclables include paper, cardboard, metal cans, plastic bottles and jugs, cartons, and glass bottles and jars. Find specifics on the residential recycling page.
Yard Waste Collection
- Weekly collection of up to 2 bags or half cubic yard pile
- Woody waste must be bundled and under 4 feet long
- Leaves, grass clippings, and plant debris must be bagged
- Extra yard waste is collected bi-weekly (see Bulk Collection below)
Yard waste includes leaves, grass clippings, brush, and woody debris. Up to 2 bags or half cubic yard pile are collected weekly. Woody branches and limbs must be bundled and under 4 feet long. Loose leaves, plant debris, and grass must be bagged. Yard waste should be separate from trash piles.
Bulk Item and Extra Yard Waste Collection
- Bi-weekly curbside collection on resident’s normal collection day
- For large and bulky items such as furniture, appliances, mattresses
- Extra yard waste collection on these days
Bulk items and extra yard waste are collected bi-weekly on the normal trash collection day. This includes large furniture, appliances, mattresses, and other bulky items. Extra yard waste can be placed curbside on these days without bundling or bagging requirements.
Household Hazardous Waste
- Drop-off center located at 6305 Haley Rd
- Accepts paint, chemicals, oils, batteries, electronics
- Open Tuesdays 7AM-1PM and Saturdays 8AM-3PM
Household hazardous waste such as paints, pesticides, oils, batteries, and electronics can be dropped off at the county’s household hazardous waste facility. The drop-off center is located at 6305 Haley Rd and open Tuesdays and Saturdays.
Trash Cart Leasing
- Extra trash carts can be leased for $10/month
- Carts are 95-gallon capacity
- Complete an application to lease extra carts
Households that need extra trash capacity can lease additional 95-gallon carts from the city for $10 per month. Complete the cart lease application and the fee will be added to your monthly utility bill. There is no limit on the number of extra carts that can be leased.
Holiday Collection Schedule
Trash and recycling collection are delayed by one day after major holidays:
- New Year’s Day
- Martin Luther King Jr Day
- Memorial Day
- Independence Day
- Labor Day
- Thanksgiving Day
- Christmas Day
Check the holiday collection schedule for exact dates. Collection will occur on the next day for the remainder of that week (Friday pickup moves to Saturday).
Eligibility and Fees
- Trash and recycling services are provided to all households within Memphis city limits
- Services are paid through a monthly Solid Waste Fee on MLGW utility bills
- Senior and disabled low-income discount available
All households within Memphis city limits are eligible for trash and recycling service. The services are paid through a monthly Solid Waste Fee assessed on MLGW utility bills. Low-income seniors and disabled residents can apply for a discount on their solid waste fees.
