Oceanside, located in sunny Southern California, is a beachside city with a population of about 180,000 residents. With its growing population and popularity as a tourist destination, effective trash and recycling collection is essential to keeping Oceanside clean and sustainable. This article provides an overview of trash and recycling programs, schedules, and contact information for Oceanside residents and visitors.

Trash and Recycling Service Provider

Waste Management is the contracted franchise service provider for trash, recycling, and organics collection in Oceanside. They provide carts, bins, and roll-offs for residential and commercial customers throughout the city.

Automated Curbside Collection

Oceanside utilizes automated curbside collection for single-family homes. Residents have 3 carts – blue for recycling, green for organics including yard waste and food scraps, and black or gray for landfill trash. Carts are collected weekly on designated service days.

Oceanside’s Three Cart Sizes:

  • 96 gallon
  • 64 gallon
  • 35 gallon

Larger landfill carts are available for an additional monthly fee. Waste Management can be contacted to request cart exchanges or additional services.

Collection Schedule

Most Oceanside neighborhoods have Monday – Thursday collection days. Trash carts must be placed curbside by 6 AM on collection day, but no earlier than 5 PM the evening before. Carts should be removed from the curb by 6 PM on collection day.

Specific collection days are determined by neighborhood:

Bulky Items and Extra Service

Residents can schedule collection of bulky items that don’t fit in the carts, such as furniture and appliances. Waste Management offers 2 free bulky item collections per year. Additional pickups can be scheduled for a fee of $25.49 for the first item and $15.24 for each additional item.

Other extra services like cleaning out a garage or removing construction debris can also be scheduled for an additional cost.

Recycling Right

Contamination of recycling and organics carts is a major issue, as it can ruin entire truckloads. Oceanside aims for “Zero Waste” and needs resident’s help to recycle properly.
