Regular Trash and Recycling Collection
Trash and recycling collection in Sun Prairie occurs once per week on designated days depending on your location.

Trash collection occurs on Mondays for properties west of Bird Street and on Tuesdays for properties east of Bird Street.

Recycling collection occurs on Thursdays for properties west of Bird Street and on Fridays for properties east of Bird Street.
Below are the designated collection days based on your address:
- Monday trash collection – Properties west of Bird St
- Tuesday trash collection – Properties east of Bird St
- Thursday recycling collection – Properties west of Bird St
- Friday recycling collection – Properties east of Bird St
Trash and recycling carts should be placed at the curb by 6:00 AM on collection days, but no earlier than 5:00 PM the evening before. Carts must be removed from the curb by 10:00 PM on collection day.

Trash Cart Sizes and Service Levels
All single family homes are provided with a 96-gallon trash cart, but residents can request a smaller 64-gallon cart if desired. Townhomes and duplexes are provided with 64-gallon trash carts.
Extra trash carts can be requested for an additional monthly fee based on cart size:
- 64 gallon extra trash cart: $12.00/month
- 96 gallon extra trash cart: $16.00/month
To request a different trash cart size, submit a cart exchange form.
Recycling Cart Sizes
All households receive one 96-gallon recycling cart. Additional recycling carts can be requested by contacting the Department of Public Works.
Yard Waste Collection

Yard waste is collected seasonally from April through November.

Collection occurs on the same day as your recycling day.

Yard waste must be placed in paper bags or rigid unbagged containers labeled as “Yard Waste.”

Brush must be bundled with string or twine in 4-foot lengths. Bundles should not exceed 18 inches in diameter.
Bulk Item Collection
Bulk items such as furniture, mattresses, and appliances are collected on your regular trash day. Bulk items must be placed at the curb next to your trash cart.

A maximum of 2 bulk items can be placed out each week.

Doors must be removed from refrigerators and freezers.
Holiday Collection Schedule
Trash and recycling collection are delayed by one day after the following holidays:
- New Year’s Day
- Memorial Day
- Independence Day
- Labor Day
- Thanksgiving Day
- Christmas Day
For example, if your normal trash day is Monday, it will be delayed to Tuesday after a holiday.

Christmas Tree Collection
Christmas trees are collected curbside for two weeks in January. Collection occurs on your normal trash day.
All decorations and stands must be removed from trees. Do not place trees in plastic bags.
Hazardous Waste Disposal
Hazardous waste such as chemicals, batteries, fluorescent bulbs, and other items should not be placed in your curbside trash.
Sun Prairie residents can dispose of hazardous waste for free at the Dane County Clean Sweep events held several times per year.

Large Item Pickup
For disposal of large items that cannot be included in regular bulk item collection like construction debris, appliances, furniture, etc. you can request a special pickup for a fee of $25 minimum or $125 per ton.

Temporary dumpsters can be rented from the City of Sun Prairie for a fee. Dumpster rental includes delivery, dumpster rental for 7 days, and debris disposal.
- 2 cubic yard dumpster – $150

- 8 cubic yard dumpster – $375
