Belmont, Massachusetts provides weekly trash and biweekly recycling collection services to residents through a contract with Waste Management. This article covers key details of the collection schedule, materials accepted, special item disposal, and more.
Collection Days
Trash collection occurs weekly on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays depending on your address.
Recycling collection occurs every other week on the same weekday as your trash pickup.

Holidays do not affect the weekly trash schedule. Recycling collection is delayed by one day if a holiday falls on your scheduled recycling day.
Accepted Materials
Belmont offers single-stream recycling collection. Acceptable materials include:
- Plastic containers #1, 2, and 5
- Glass bottles and jars
- Metal food and beverage cans
- Paper and cardboard
Items must be clean and dry with no food residue. Do not bag recyclables.
Unacceptable materials: Plastic bags, plastic takeout containers, foam containers, electronics, batteries, textiles, yard waste.

Special Item Disposal

Appliances/White Goods: Purchase a $25 sticker from various town locations. Schedule a pickup through DPW.

Mattresses: Schedule a pickup through DPW. Separate from trash on collection day.

Bulk Items: Call Waste Management to schedule pickup of large household items.

Hazardous Waste: Register for semi-annual household hazardous waste drop-off events.

Textiles: Place clean, dry textiles in donation bins around town. Do not leave items outside bins.

Batteries: Bring to the DPW office or dispose in trash (except 9V batteries).

Overflow Trash
Extra trash that won’t fit in your bin can be placed in official overflow bags purchased at various town locations. Limit of 6 overflow bags per week.
Unapproved extra trash will not be collected.
Collection Requirements

Carts must be curbside by 7 AM on your collection day.

Position carts 4 feet apart and 8 feet from obstructions.

Trash and recycling carts must be closed securely.

Do not bag recyclables or put recyclables in trash carts.

Report any missed collections by 12 PM the next business day.
