Trash Carts

Coralville uses an automated garbage collection system with trash carts. Residents can choose either a 35-gallon or 65-gallon trash cart. These carts are property of the city. When you move, you must leave the cart for the next resident.

Monthly trash fees depend on your cart size:

  • 35-gallon: $15.25
  • 65-gallon: $16.75

Collection Days

Trash and recycling are collected weekly on your designated day. Collection happens between 7am-3pm. View the collection day map to find your scheduled day.

  • Make sure carts are out by 7am on your scheduled day.
  • Carts put out too early or late may be missed.

Cart Placement

  • Place carts at the curb with arrows on the lid pointing toward the street.
  • Leave 4 feet of clearance around the cart.
  • Close the lid completely.

What’s Not Accepted

Some items cannot go in your regular trash cart, including:

  • Hazardous waste (chemicals, batteries, oil, etc.)
  • Tires
  • Appliances/electronics
  • Yard waste
  • Construction debris
  • Cardboard

Extra Trash

If you have extra trash that doesn’t fit in your cart, you can dispose of it in a few ways:

Garbage Stickers

  • Purchase a $3 garbage sticker for each extra bag up to 33 gallons.
  • Place the extra bag on top of the closed cart lid.
  • Only 1 extra tagged bag per week will be collected.

Special Pickup

For large items like appliances, furniture, tires, etc. you can schedule a special curbside pickup. Fees vary by item. Schedule online or call 319-248-1740.

Recycling

Coralville provides single-stream recycling collection. All recyclables can go in your blue recycling cart together on your collection day.

Accepted recyclables include:

  • Plastic bottles and containers
  • Glass bottles and jars

Yard Waste

Coralville collects yard waste like leaves, branches, and brush on your collection day from April 1 to November 30. Use brown paper yard waste bags or reusable containers marked “yard waste.”

The rest of the year, you can take yard waste to the transfer station. Or schedule a special pickup for an extra fee.

Christmas Trees

Live Christmas trees are collected curbside for 2 weeks after Christmas each year. Remove all decorations first. Trees over 6 feet tall must be cut in half.
