Oceanside, located in sunny Southern California, is a beachside city with a population of about 180,000 residents. With its growing population and popularity as a tourist destination, effective trash and recycling collection is essential to keeping Oceanside clean and sustainable. Trash and Recycling Service Provider
Waste Management is the contracted franchise service provider for trash, recycling, and organics collection in Oceanside. They provide carts, bins, and roll-offs for residential and commercial customers throughout the city.
Automated Curbside Collection
Oceanside utilizes automated curbside collection for single-family homes. Residents have 3 carts – blue for recycling, green for organics including yard waste and food scraps, and black or gray for landfill trash. Carts are collected weekly on designated service days.
Oceanside’s Three Cart Sizes:
- 96 gallon
- 64 gallon
- 35 gallon
Larger landfill carts are available for an additional monthly fee. Waste Management can be contacted to request cart exchanges or additional services.
Collection Schedule
Most Oceanside neighborhoods have Monday – Thursday collection days. Trash carts must be placed curbside by 6 AM on collection day, but no earlier than 5 PM the evening before. Carts should be removed from the curb by 6 PM on collection day.
Specific collection days are determined by neighborhood:

Holiday Schedule
If the regular collection day falls on or after a major holiday, service will be delayed by one day that week.
Oceanside observes the following holidays:
- New Year’s Day
- Memorial Day
- Independence Day
- Labor Day
- Thanksgiving Day
- Christmas Day
If the holiday falls on a Sunday, there is no schedule change.

Bulky Items and Extra Service
Residents can schedule collection of bulky items that don’t fit in the carts, such as furniture and appliances. Waste Management offers 2 free bulky item collections per year. Additional pickups can be scheduled for a fee of $25.49 for the first item and $15.24 for each additional item.
Other extra services like cleaning out a garage or removing construction debris can also be scheduled for an additional cost.
Recycling Right
Contamination of recycling and organics carts is a major issue, as it can ruin entire truckloads. Oceanside aims for “Zero Waste” and needs resident’s help to recycle properly.

Food Scraps Recycling
As of January 1, 2024, all residents and businesses will be required to participate in food scraps recycling. Food scraps and food soiled paper will go in the green organics cart. Backyard composting is also encouraged.

Multi-Family and Commercial Collection
Special programs and collection schedules are in place for apartments, condos, businesses, and industrial facilities. Waste Management works directly with property managers and business owners to provide bins, carts, and dumpsters tailored to their unique needs.

Free Drop-Off Programs
In addition to curbside collection, Oceanside provides several free drop-off programs for responsible disposal of hazardous waste.
Household Hazardous Waste drop-off is available at the Oceanside Facility twice per week, Wednesday & Saturdays 8am-3pm. Items accepted include chemicals, batteries, electronics, needles, etc.
Used motor oil and filters can be taken to over a dozen certified Centers in Oceanside for proper recycling.
Medication and sharps drop boxes are located at police stations and some pharmacies.
Buyback Recycling Center
The Oceanside Buyback Recycling Center accepts all CRV beverage containers for cash refunds Monday-Saturday 9am to 4pm. They also take scrap metal, ewaste, cardboard, and more for recycling.
