Trash and Recycling Collection Schedule in Virginia Beach

The City of Virginia Beach provides trash and recycling collection services to residents. The Public Works Waste Management Division oversees scheduling and operations.

Trash Collection

  • Trash is collected once per week on designated collection days.

  • Collection days are determined by location and marked on the trash collection map.

  • Trash must be placed curbside in city-issued carts or personal containers by 7 AM on collection days.

  • Weight limits per container:

    • Carts: 200 lbs

    • Personal containers: 50 lbs

  • Excess trash can be placed in bags beside carts on collection day.

Recycling Collection

  • Recycling is collected once per week on designated collection days.

  • Check the recycling collection map for your scheduled day.

  • Accepted recycling materials:

    • Plastics #1-7

    • Glass bottles & jars

    • Aluminum & steel cans

    • Mixed paper, cardboard, cartons

  • Place recycling curbside by 7 AM in city-issued carts or personal containers.

  • Do not bag recyclables together. Paper products can be bagged separately.

  • Flatten cardboard boxes.

Yard Debris Collection

  • Yard debris is collected once per week from March to December.

  • Use biodegradable paper bags or personal containers labeled “yard debris.”

  • Bundle branches under 4 feet long and 50 pounds.

  • Place yard debris curbside by 7 AM on collection day.

Bulky Item Pickup

  • Residents can request curbside collection of bulk items like furniture and appliances.

  • Request pickup via the online form or by phone at (757) 385-4650.

  • Limit of 2 bulky items per collection. Freon-containing appliances incur a $25 fee.

Holiday Schedule

  • No collection on official holidays:

    • New Year’s Day

    • Memorial Day

    • Independence Day

    • Labor Day

    • Thanksgiving

    • Christmas Day

  • Collections on holidays are rescheduled to the next day through Saturday.

Hazardous Waste Disposal

  • Household hazardous waste like chemicals, CFL bulbs, batteries, gasoline etc. must be disposed of properly.

  • Drop off hazardous waste at the Landfill & Resource Recovery Center (1985 Jake Sears Rd) from 7 AM – 4:30 PM Tuesday through Saturday.

  • Limit 50 gallons or 220 pounds per visit.

Recycling Centers

  • The Landfill & Resource Recovery Center accepts recyclables and hazardous waste Tuesday through Saturday from 7 AM – 4:30 PM

  • The West Neck Recycling Center (2500 West Neck Rd) accepts recyclables Monday through Saturday from 7 AM – 4:30 PM.
