Holiday Collection Schedules
Trash and recycling collection in Akron is delayed by one day when the following holidays fall on a weekday:
- Martin Luther King Jr. Day
- Memorial Day
- Independence Day
- Labor Day
- Thanksgiving Day
- Christmas Day
There is no delay for Juneteenth.

Finding Your Collection Day
Akron provides an interactive map to find your trash and recycling collection day. You can access it here.
To use the map:
- Zoom into your area of the city
- Type your address in the search bar to zoom to your location
- Check the legend to see what color corresponds to your collection day
You can also call 311 from a landline or 330-375-2311 from a cell phone to ask about your collection day.
Trash and Recycling Cart Use
Akron requires residents to use city-issued trash and recycling carts. Important notes:
- Only city carts will be collected, not personal trash cans
- Trash must be bagged inside carts
- Carts must be placed at the curb by 4:30 AM on collection day
- Carts must be 3 feet apart
- Lids must be fully closed without overloading
- Carts must be removed from curb by 6:00 PM after collection
Accepted and Prohibited Materials
Acceptable trash includes bagged household waste. Do not place the following in trash carts:
- Hot ashes
- Hazardous waste
- Construction debris (roofing, concrete, plaster, bricks, etc.)
Acceptable recycling includes metal cans, glass bottles and jars, paper, cardboard, and plastics marked #1-5 and #7. Do not place the following in recycling carts:
- Plastic grocery bags
- Pizza boxes and food contaminated paper
- Yard waste
- Hazardous waste
Bulk and Oversize Item Pickup
For large items like furniture and appliances that don’t fit in the cart, Akron offers bulk pickup. To schedule:
- Call 311 at least 1 business day before your collection day
- Items must be placed at the curb by 4:30 PM the evening before your pickup day
Each household is allowed 3 bulk pickups per year.
Additional Carts and Assistance
You can request an additional trash or recycling cart for a one-time $50 fee by calling 311. The limit is 2 extra carts per material type.
If you need help taking carts to the curb due to medical conditions, Akron offers a special assistance program. You must submit a form signed by your physician.
Glass Recycling
Akron recently launched a glass recycling drop-off program. Glass bottles and jars can be taken to any of the following locations:

- Akron’s Dog Park
- Behind Spaghetti Warehouse
- Goodyear Heights Metroparks
- Goodpark Golf Course
