Glendale Bulk Trash Schedule and Collection Guidelines

//

Admin

The City of Glendale offers bulk trash collection services to residential properties, allowing residents to dispose of large items that cannot fit in their regular trash bins. Understanding the bulk trash schedule and following the collection guidelines helps ensure trash is disposed of properly and services run efficiently.

Overview of Bulk Trash Service

  • Bulk trash collection is for large household items that won’t fit inside standard trash bins. This includes furniture, appliances, mattresses, and other oversized waste.

  • Collection is on a scheduled route based on your home’s designated bulk trash zone. Routes run on a 6-7 week rotation.

  • Items must be placed curbside by 6 AM on your scheduled Monday collection day. The truck runs once through each zone so have items ready on time.

  • There is no extra charge for bulk trash collection. It is covered by your monthly residential trash service fees.

  • Review the bulk trash schedule to find your zone’s collection day. Schedules are available on the City of Glendale website.

What Items are Accepted for Bulk Trash?

Bulk trash collection takes large household items that won’t fit inside your standard roll carts. Acceptable materials include:

  • Furniture – couches, chairs, tables, mattresses, box springs, etc.

  • Appliances – washers, dryers, water heaters, stoves, refrigerators, etc.

  • Other large waste – toys, tents, cabinets, grills, shelves, sinks, toilets, etc.

  • Yard waste – tree branches, logs, brush, palm fronds, etc. Must be bundled and under 4 feet long.

  • Building materials – doors, windows, sinks, cabinets, carpet, tile, etc. Nails and screws must be removed or bent over.

  • Electronics – computers, TVs, game consoles, printers, phones, DVD players, etc.

  • Tires – limit 10 tires per collection. No rims or wheels attached.

Key Notes on Accepted Items:

  • Items must be manageable for 2 people to lift. Individual items cannot exceed 200 lbs.

  • Hazardous waste is prohibited (see restricted items list below).

  • Loose debris must be bagged or containerized.

  • Yard waste should be bundled for easy collection.

What Items are Restricted from Bulk Trash?

Some items are hazardous, oversized, or difficult to collect. Restricted materials that will NOT be picked up include:

  • Hazardous waste – chemicals, gasoline, pesticides, batteries, paint, oils, propane tanks, etc.

  • Dirt, rocks, concrete, or construction/demo debris.

  • Loose debris or materials not containerized.

  • Fuel tanks, cylinders, or other containers holding unknown/hazardous substances.

  • Any items over 200 lbs or too large for 2 people to lift.

  • Commercial/business waste or illegally dumped items.

The following materials cannot be disposed via bulk trash. Alternative disposal options are available:

  • Green waste – Take yard clippings, grass, leaves, branches, etc. to the Glendale Landfill.

  • Household hazardous waste – Take chemicals, batteries, paint, motor oil, etc. to the Glendale Household Hazardous Waste Facility.

  • Appliances with refrigerant – Call a certified technician to remove refrigerant before disposal.

  • Electronics – Take computers, TVs, and other devices to a recycling center.

Bulk Trash Collection Process

Here is an overview of what to expect on your scheduled bulk trash collection day:

  • All items must be placed curbside by 6 AM Monday morning.

  • The truck will come through once on your designated day. Have everything ready on time.

  • Crews will inspect items before loading. They can reject prohibited materials.

  • Collection staff have discretion on what items they can or cannot take. Their decision is final.

  • Crews will not enter private property. All items must be curbside and accessible.

  • Personnel will not unload bins, vehicles, or trailers. Items must be loose curbside.

  • Collection times vary based on volume. Your items may be picked up anytime on Monday.

  • Leave space between piles. Clustering too close together makes collection difficult.

  • Once your items are collected, the empty space must be kept clear. Do not refill it.

Preparing Items for Bulk Trash Collection

Take steps to ensure your bulk trash is ready for collection:

  • Break down large items. Disassemble furniture and take doors off appliances.

  • Remove or bend over any protruding nails, screws, or fasteners.

  • Drain all fluids from machinery, appliances, mowers, etc. Items must be empty and dry.

  • Wrap sharp edges with cardboard or use other padding to prevent injury.

  • Bag, box, or contain loose trash so it does not blow away when set curbside.

  • Cut long branches into 4 foot lengths and bundle yard waste for easy handling.

  • Tie appliances shut so doors don’t swing open during collection.

  • Label or mark any items that contain refrigerant and need certified disposal.

Taking time to properly prepare your bulk trash makes the collection process faster and safer. It also reduces the risk of having materials rejected.

What If Items Are Not Collected?

Sometimes bulk trash may not be collected if:

  • It contains prohibited hazardous, oversized, or unaccepted materials.

  • Items were placed curbside late and the truck already passed.

  • Materials were not accessible or safely placed at the curb.

  • Piles were clustered too close together preventing collection.

  • Items did not meet disposal requirements (e.g. refrigerant not removed from appliances).

If your materials are not collected on the scheduled pickup day:

  • Review the accepted and prohibited items lists. Remove anything unaccepted.

  • Check the preparation requirements. Break down items, contain loose trash, etc.

  • Ensure materials are curbside by 6 AM on the next collection day for your zone.
