Trash Collection

  • Trash collection in Kirksville is provided by RTS Waste Services LLC.

  • All households are required to have trash collection service. The monthly fee of $11.55 is charged on city utility bills.

  • Trash must be curbside by 6:30 AM on collection day.

  • Trash cannot be placed curbside earlier than noon the day before your scheduled collection.

  • Trash carts must be returned to the side or back of the home within 24 hours of collection.

  • Each household is provided one 65-gallon trash cart by RTS Waste Services. Extra carts can be requested for $4/month.

  • Bagged trash outside the cart will not be collected. The cart lid must fully close.

  • One large household item can be placed curbside weekly alongside the trash cart. Certain items like batteries, tires, and construction debris are not accepted.

Recycling Collection

  • Recycling is collected every other week on your scheduled trash collection day.

  • Accepted recyclables include:

    • Plastics #1 and #2

    • Aluminum and tin cans

    • Paper and cardboard

    • Milk jugs and plastic grocery bags

  • Recyclables should be clean and dry.

  • Each household is provided one 65-gallon recycling cart. Extra carts can be requested at no charge.

  • Any overflow recyclables can be placed in clear plastic bags beside the cart.

Glass Recycling

  • Glass recycling requires purchasing a separate glass collection tote from the city for $3.99.

  • Glass collection is the first Monday of each month. Totes must be curbside by 6:30 AM.

  • All glass food and beverage containers are accepted. Items should be rinsed clean.

Yard Waste

  • Brush and limbs under 4 feet long and 2 inches diameter are collected curbside twice per year during Spring and Fall city-wide cleanups.

  • The city brush site located at 22376 State Hwy 6 is open year-round for dropping off brush and limbs from city residents.

Household Hazardous Waste

  • Household hazardous waste like chemicals, batteries, and lightbulbs can be dropped off at the Public Works Complex at 2001 N. Osteopathy.

  • Drop-offs are by appointment only during scheduled days in May and September.

Holiday Schedule

Trash and recycling collection are delayed by one day after these holidays:

  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving

Glass collection is also delayed by one day after Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day.
