South Hadley, Massachusetts provides weekly curbside trash and recycling pickup for residents. This article outlines key details about South Hadley’s waste collection schedule, including regular pickup days, holidays, bulk items, yard waste, and other important guidelines.

Regular Collection Schedule

  • Trash is collected weekly on a designated day depending on your location. Carts must be curbside by 7AM.

  • Recycling is picked up every other week on your scheduled trash day.

  • Yard waste collection also occurs biweekly from April to December, alternating weeks with recycling.

Find your personalized collection calendar by looking up your street name to determine your route number and designated day.

The town provides one 64-gallon trash cart and one 64-gallon recycling cart per household. Extra carts can be requested for a fee.

Holiday Schedule

Collection is suspended on these holidays:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day

After a holiday, pickup resumes the following business day, shifting the remainder of that week’s schedule back by one day.

Recycling

Accepted curbside recyclables include paper, cardboard, glass bottles/jars, aluminum cans, tin cans, and plastic containers (#1-7). No plastic bags can be accepted.

Visit the Recycling Directory for full guidelines.

Yard Waste

Accepted yard waste for biweekly collection includes leaves, grass clippings, prunings, and brush no longer than 4 feet bundled with string/twine.

Place yard waste in paper compost bags, personal containers clearly marked “yard waste,” or biodegradable plastic bags. No plastic bags can be used.

Yard waste is banned from landfill disposal in Massachusetts. South Hadley also offers seasonal Christmas tree collection in January and April “Clean Sweep” collection for large volumes of yard waste.

Bulky Waste

Bulky items like appliances, furniture, mattresses, and toys are collected at the curb on your trash day. Call the Recycling Coordinator at (413) 538-5017 at least 24 hours before your pickup day to schedule.

Remove doors from refrigerators and freon from appliances before placing curbside. There is no extra fee for bulky waste pickup.

Hazardous Waste

Household hazardous waste like chemicals, oils, batteries, and CFL bulbs cannot be disposed of in curbside bins. Bring these materials to the Regional Household Hazardous Products Collection Center on designated collection days.

Proof of residency is required. Fees apply to dispose of TVs, computer monitors, and other electronics.
