Tacoma, Washington provides city-wide garbage, recycling, and yard waste collection for residents through an organized weekly schedule. This article outlines key details about Tacoma’s trash and recycling pickup, including regular collection days, holidays, bulk waste, and other guidelines.
Regular Collection Schedule

Garbage is collected weekly on your designated day. Carts must be placed curbside by 6AM.

Recycling and yard waste alternate biweekly on the same day as your garbage pickup.

The city provides each household with a 96-gallon cart for garbage, 65-gallon cart for recycling, and 96-gallon cart for yard waste. Extra carts can be requested for a fee.
Holiday Schedule
Collection is suspended on these holidays:
- New Year’s Day
- Independence Day
- Thanksgiving
- Christmas Day
After a holiday, collection resumes the next business day, shifting the remainder of that week’s pickups back one day.
Recycling
Accepted curbside recyclables include paper, cardboard, aluminum cans, tin cans, glass bottles and jars, and plastic containers. Find a full list in the Recycling Directory.
Additional recyclables can be dropped off at the City’s Recycling Center at 3510 S Mullen St, open Monday-Saturday 8AM-5PM.
Yard Waste
Accepted yard waste includes leaves, grass clippings, branches under 4 feet long and 4 inches diameter, garden waste, and prunings. Place in paper bags or reusable containers, or bundle branches.
Food scraps and soiled paper can also be included as yard waste. The city provides kits to start a backyard compost bin.
Bulky Waste
Bulky items like appliances, furniture, and mattresses are collected curbside by appointment. Contact City Call-2-Haul at (253) 573-2468 to schedule.
There is no extra charge for up to 3 bulky items, $20 for each additional item. Refrigerant removal is required for appliances.
Hazardous Waste
Household hazardous waste like chemicals, batteries, CFL bulbs, and oils cannot be disposed in your curbside bins. Drop off these materials at the Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 3510 S Mullen St for proper disposal.
Proof of Tacoma residency is required. There is no charge for residential volumes.
