Shaler Township provides weekly garbage and recycling collection to residents through a contracted hauler, County Hauling. This article explains Shaler’s trash and recycling schedules, policies, and resources to ensure proper curbside setout.
Collection Days
Trash and recycling pickup occurs once per week on an assigned day depending on your neighborhood:

Check the street listing to find your designated collection day.

Garbage and recycling are collected on the same day.

Collection runs Monday through Friday from 6AM to 5PM.

Place bins curbside by 6AM on your pickup day.
Holiday Schedule Changes
If your regular collection day falls on or after a major holiday, pickup that week will be delayed by one day:
- New Year’s Day
- Memorial Day
- Independence Day
- Labor Day
- Thanksgiving Day
- Christmas Day

Curbside Setout Guidelines
Follow these rules for proper curbside placement:

Position bins within 2 feet of the curb with lids opening toward the street.

Keep 3-4 feet of space between individual containers.

Avoid placing bins near parked cars or other obstructions.

Make sure lids can fully close. Overstuffed bins will not be collected.
Accepted Materials
Shaler Township accepts the following curbside:
Trash: All household waste must be bagged. Trash bins are limited to 10 bags per week.
Recycling: Paper, cardboard, glass, plastics, aluminum and steel cans.
Yard Waste: Leaves, grass clippings, twigs. Place in biodegradable yard waste bags or rigid containers labeled “yard waste.”
Bulk Items: Furniture, mattresses, appliances. Limit one large item per week. Refrigerants must be removed from appliances by a certified technician.
Unaccepted Materials
Items prohibited from curbside pickup include:
- Hazardous waste (chemicals, batteries, paints, lightbulbs)
- Tires
- Dirt, rocks, concrete
- Construction debris
- Liquids
Contact County Hauling to properly dispose of prohibited items.
Recycling Bin Size and Weight Limits
Standard recycling bin size and weight restrictions:

Overweight bins will not be collected. Contact the hauler if you routinely have excess recycling.
Yard Waste Season
Yard waste is collected weekly from the first full week of April through the second full week of December. Christmas trees are also collected curbside for 2 weeks after Christmas.
Hazardous Waste Disposal
Shaler residents can schedule pickup of household hazardous waste like chemicals, batteries, fluorescent bulbs, and electronics up to 4 times per year. Contact County Hauling to arrange disposal.
Hazardous waste can also be dropped off at periodic collection events. Check the township website for upcoming event dates.

Shaler trash collection is billed quarterly:
