Trash and Recycling Collection Schedules in Flagstaff, AZ

Flagstaff is the county seat of Coconino County, Arizona. With a population of around 73,000, it is the largest city in northern Arizona. The City of Flagstaff provides municipal trash and recycling services to residents. Overview of Trash and Recycling Services

The Solid Waste Section of the City of Flagstaff’s Public Works Division handles trash, recycling, and bulk item collection for residential properties within city limits.

Standard trash service is provided weekly with automated pickup using wheeled carts. Recycling is also collected weekly on the same day as trash. Separate seasonal curbside collection is offered for bulk items, yard waste, and Christmas trees.

Flagstaff utilizes a Recycle by the Cart program. All households receive one 96-gallon blue recycling cart. Trash carts in 3 sizes – 35, 64, or 96 gallons – are available upon request for free.

Special services are available for disabled residents and extra carts can be requested for a fee. The city provides carts, so trash bags or personal containers cannot be used.

Trash and Recycling Collection Schedules

Trash and recycling pickup occurs once per week on your designated day. Collection routes are divided into five sections:

• Monday: Southside
• Tuesday: Westside
• Wednesday: Central
• Thursday: Northeast
• Friday: Eastside

If your normal pickup day falls on or after a holiday, service will be delayed by one day through the end of that week.

Carts must be placed curbside by 6AM on collection days. After pickup, carts should be removed from the curb by the end of the day.

Recycling Policies and Guidelines

The following recyclables can be placed in the blue carts:

• Paper: newspaper, office paper, cardboard, magazines, catalogs, junk mail
• Plastic bottles and jugs with necks only
• Glass bottles and jars
• Aluminum cans and clean foil
• Tin and steel cans

Plastic bags, Styrofoam, wine corks, ceramics, window glass, food waste, and other contaminants are prohibited.

The city aims for less than 10% contamination in the recycling stream. Repeat contamination offenders may have recycling services suspended.

Used motor oil is accepted at designated recycling drop-off sites around Flagstaff. Batteries can be dropped off for recycling at City Hall, the Aquaplex, and other municipal buildings.

Electronics like TVs and computers must be recycled through the Hazardous Products Center.

Bulk Trash Collection

The Bulk Trash Program provides curbside pickup of large, bulky items that don’t fit in the carts. Collection happens once every 5 weeks on a rotating schedule by section of the city.

Accepted bulk items include:

• Furniture
• Mattresses
• Carpets
• Appliances
• Tree branches
• Extra bagged trash

Place items neatly at the curb no earlier than 1 week before or later than 6AM on the Monday of your scheduled week. Piles must be under 5ft x 5ft x 5ft. Keep 3 feet of clearance from other objects.

Unaccepted items like tires, hazardous waste, and construction debris must be disposed of separately. Refrigerant appliances require prepaid pickup scheduled through the city.

Yard Waste Collection

Seasonal curbside collection of yard waste like leaves, grass, and brush runs from approximately March through November each year. Materials must be in paper bags or open containers marked “yard waste.”

Christmas tree collection occurs for two weeks in January. Trees over 6 feet must be cut in half.

At other times, yard waste must be taken to the Cinder Lake Landfill. Mulching lawn mowers or on-site composting are encouraged to recycle grass clippings.

Household Hazardous Waste Disposal

Household hazardous waste (HHW) like chemicals, batteries, CFL bulbs, and electronics cannot be disposed in the trash. Flagstaff residents must take HHW to the Hazardous Products Center for proper disposal.

Some HHW like used motor oil and batteries can be dropped off at designated recycling locations around the city.

Latex paint is not accepted. Once dried out, empty paint cans can go in the regular trash (without lids).
